Weekly Photo Challenge: Afloat

The theme of the WordPress Weekly Challenge this week is afloat, which is used to describe something above the surface, or drifting without difficulty.

I took this photo during my recent winter getaway to Naples, Florida. As a much needed escape from chilly air of New England, most of our vacation time was spent enjoying the great outdoors. During the sunset on this one particular evening, I was taken back by the great number of seagulls that had congregated on the shoreline. As I walked over and knelt down in the sand to photograph them, there was an unexpected gust of wind. Suddenly, many of the seagulls instantly rose and were suspended over the sea. With their outstretched wings, they seemed to just float overhead, while the warm sun set behind them. A few moments later, the winds eased and they gently came back down to the surface.

How I wish I could give that a try. 🙂
